'Albums Of The Week' - Steve Jansen "Slope"

Ex-Japan drummer Steve Jansen releases his first solo album on brother David Sylvian's Samadhisound label.

It's an interesting concept, experimenting with sounds, textures and rhythms. The result is a beautiful mix of mature, playful gems that are full of depth. Conversation Over is the strongest instrumental composition, nostalgic and poignant, while Cancelled Pieces is clever and fun. The two versions of Playground Martyrs (sung by David Sylvian and Nina Kinert) are outstanding and Ballad Of A Deadman, the duet between Sylvian and Joan Wasser (Joan As Policewoman), is a bluesy joy.

It's disappointing that Steve doesn't sing himself, but his fine choice of guest artists more than compensates.
