Fans of David Sylvian’s Bryan Ferry/David Bowie stylings with his old group, Japan, may find this spiky solo improvisation heavy going. Initially an internet exclusive release, the now locally available Blemish employs the guitar as a sonic offsider for treated noise, rather than an instrument, and Sylvian’s often double tracked voice. The stark, raw atmosphere of the bitter love songs juxtaposes Sylvian’s heart-on-sleeve lyricism with the icy touch of treated electronica. A riveting study in isolation made for close listening.
