The Sunday Times - David Sylvian "When Loud Weather Buffeted Naoshima"

27.08.07

Although Sylvian has assembled a crack team of international musicians here - including Christian Fennesz and Arve Henriksen - this enchanting abstract soundscape is more about atmospheric evocation than instrumental performance. It begins with a sequence of creaks and roars that suggests we are in a boat at sea; further on, fugitive siren voices and a distantly revving car zone in and out, providing structural reference points for a 70-minute ambient symphony. For those of a contemplative cast of mind, it is as engrossing as watching flames flickering in a giant fireplace. Yet this limited-edition release contains little for fans of Sylvian's gorgeous groan and languorous tunes beyond a fabulous attention to sound detail and texture.
