Jan Bang is a musician, DJ and producer from Kristiansand, Norway who is a renowned artist in the experimental, electronic, improv scene. This is Bang’s full-length debut album on David Sylvian’s imprint. He plays live sampling and programming in the Jon Hassell Group, Arve Henriksen trio, duo project with Sidsel Endresen and trio with Nils Petter Molvær and DJ Strangefruit. He is a member of the groups Punkt (with Erik Honoré), and Woodlands (with Honoré and Kay Rune Rasmussen).
For this album Bang had worked since 2009 with found sounds, orchestral samples from classical composers, soft synths and manipulated trumpet sounds and with this material he thought about some artists that could fit well with this work as trumpeters Arve Henriksen, Jon Hassel and Nils Petter Molvær, among other artists.
“… And Poppies…” is a combination of soft trumpet passages, prepared piano, theatrical vocals, classical music excerpts and recordings. The fine arrangements and vocals coexist within the ambient composition and jazz incursions.
From the contraction of 'The Midwife's Dilemma' with Endresen abstract vocal contributions to the expansive horizons of soft and processed trumpets of Hassel, Henriksen and Molvaer like in “Taking life”, or the soundtrack like on “Heidegger’s silence”.
“… And Poppies…” is a fine and delicate and a really treasure to and keep.
